Because of strong collective interactions, a ideal plasma is commonly
treated within mean field approximation.
The basic instability which arises at this level is due to wave-particle
interaction.
It is wrongly considered to be kinetic. I will show why. Nevertheless, one
feature is the condensation of energy at the Debye length scale, therefore
questioning the validity of mean field.
Disregarding this point, the analogue is a Rayleigh instability, of which I
will give a phenomenology of the large fluctuations. There is hysteretic
behavior, reminding avalanches. The stationary distributions may be
generalizations of Gibbs distributions, once a modified fluctuation
dissipation relation is assigned.
